Becoming a medical doctor is a dream of many, especially for those studying science subjects in KoiduCity, Kono District of Sierra Leone. Ten years ago, we attended one of the best schools in the district mostly affected during the 11-year civil war. The war destroyed nearly every infrastructure, leaving all schools within the municipality with no functioning chemistry laboratory. There were no professional chemistry teachers as well.
It was at the height of these challenges, the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme, deployed Ms Elumeze Ngozi Angela in, a Basic Science Teacher from Nigeria. Ms Angela (As fondly called), started offering her services to our school in June 2013. Due to her excellent teaching skills and motherly attributes, she became a source of motivation for every student. The first set of students she prepared for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) had a credit pass rate in Chemistry which rose from less than 10% to over 90%.
Due to her dedication and many unmentioned sacrifices, this ECOWAS Volunteer ensured that we, along with many other students, gained entry into our country’s only medical school and she constantly kept in contact with us. Eight years later, we are proud to announce that the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme, Sierra Leone, has produced its first set of Medical doctors in Sierra Leone: I, Momoh, Moses (Left), graduated as the best graduating student while Sandy, Solomon Fallah Foa (Right), is among the top three. EVP, Sierra Leone has also produced other many successful students in various fields and disciplines as a result of her services.
We, on behalf of all beneficiaries, extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the EVP and team for their remarkable work in Sierra Leone. We hope to continue making the programme proud of us all.
Long live EVP!
