This bold act of courage and commitment gave rise to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Since that historic day, our journey has been marked by resilience, unity and determination. Today, we are gathered to celebrate five decades of regional solidarity – a solidarity that has been evident in times of hope as well as in times of trial. ECOWAS today embodies much more than an institution: it reflects the deep-seated aspirations of over 400 million West African citizens.
