Promoting volunteering for development and integration

Promoting volunteering for development and integration The process of consolidating democracy in West Africa is progressing slowly due to the multiple political and security crises plaguing the region. These crises are hampering the desired changes towards a stronger ECOWAS, both institutionally and in terms of human capital development. In this context, whilst political and geopolitical factors must be taken into account, promoting youth volunteering remains one of the key pillars for making a significant impact on the community. Inspired by the Vision 2050 for an ‘ECOWAS of the People: Peace and Prosperity for All’, the Centre for Youth and Sports Development is committed to enabling the youth of our community to free themselves from the ills that plague society and undermine integrated development efforts. The ECOWAS Volunteer Programme, which it implements, enables young people to play an active role in regional policy-making and to promote civic-mindedness and the integration of peoples. Recognising that peace is an essential factor in the success of the institution’s vision, ECOWAS volunteers are involved in various sectors, including health, education and raising awareness about peaceful coexistence between communities. They are therefore agents for promoting peace, social cohesion and the fight against intolerance. Through this programme, they have a positive influence on the sustainable development of communities within their various fields of expertise and open doors to future partnerships.
